STUDIO VISIT WITH CHEYENNE RANDALL

Art and Design Photography

We recently had the opportunity to visit the studio of Cheyenne Randall in anticipation of his upcoming solo exhibition at Timeless Thrills, opening this fall. Western Language will debut on October 25th and run through December 20th, marking Randall’s first-ever solo presentation in Sacramento.

Rather than conforming to the label of “multidisciplinary,” Randall’s practice is guided by instinct and impulse. His work spans a variety of mediums—not out of obligation, but out of a restless, genuine desire to explore. He doesn’t chase trends or adhere to rigid frameworks; instead, he follows what feels real. Western Language is a direct expression of that honesty.

This new body of work draws from Randall’s observations of a contemporary world through the lens of an addict in recovery, graphic designer, mixed Lakota Gen Xer, and son of one of Minneapolis’ most influential indigenous artists. Randall’s father, Robert E. Randall, was an unorthodox and at times prolific artist whose work barely got to see the light of day outside of the city he became infamous in. That creative spirit imprinted on Randall and remains a quiet yet powerful force in his process.

At the same time, much of the work is informed by the visual language of tattooing—a world that continues to influence and inspire Randall in profound ways. That raw, graphic sensibility shows up in both technique and tone. Other pieces in the show feel more internal, like visualized thought—spontaneous mind-doodles rendered with intention. The result is a collection of work that moves fluidly between the personal and symbolic, the cultural and subconscious.

This show feels like a pivotal chapter in Randall’s career. The work is personal, unguarded, and aligned with the artist’s own vision—without compromise. When an artist is fully connected to the work they’re making, it shows. Western Language is that kind of show—confident, resonant, and deeply felt.

Western Language will open with a reception on Saturday, October 25th from 6–9pm. The solo exhibition will remain on view through December 20th. Stay tuned for more details—sign up for our newsletter and follow us on Instagram for the latest updates on Western Language
