Gallery Statement
A retronym, by definition, is a term created to distinguish something original from a newer version—like “acoustic guitar” after the invention of the electric. In Jose’s case, Retronym operates as a visual parallel to that idea. The exhibition brings past and present into direct conversation—pulling elements from earlier bodies of work, like his drip paintings, and placing them alongside the refined, geometric language he’s developed today.

Artist Bio
Jose Di Gregorio is a Sacramento-based painter and muralist known for intricately constructed compositions built from hand-rendered geometric systems. His work is defined by razor-sharp line-work, luminous gradients, and prismatic surfaces that shift with light, often set against expansive, cosmic fields. These layered structures—both symmetrical and irregular—intersect and repeat in ways that echo optical phenomena, recalling the lingering visual effects of tracers and afterimages. Beyond their formal precision, the works open into a more contemplative space, using pattern and repetition as a vehicle to probe questions around perception, consciousness, and the nature of existence itself.
With a practice spanning more than two decades—including over fifteen years dedicated full-time—Di Gregorio has developed a rigorous and highly refined visual language. His work is widely represented throughout Sacramento and has been presented in exhibitions and festivals across the United States and internationally, including Art Basel Miami, as well as presentations throughout Europe and North America.
He studied at the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art in Brittany, France, and at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. Originally from Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, he continues to live and work in Sacramento, California.
