STUDIO VISIT WITH AMINE RASTGAR

Art and Design Photography

As we approach the opening of our next exhibition at the gallery, we had the pleasure of visiting the studio of Amine Rastgar and chatting with him about his new body of work. His solo exhibition, Present Day Babylon, is just two weeks out, opening Saturday, March 7th at 6pm. We explored Rastgar's studio while connecting and becoming more familiar with the work we are looking forward to installing.

Present Day Babylon brings together Rastgar’s graffiti roots and animation background, both of which shape the visual language of his work. His recognizable style moves fluidly from piece to piece, often layered with 1990s nostalgia—icons, symbols, and cultural references that feel both playful and familiar.

Beneath that surface, this body of work reflects more personal and contemplative territory. Many of the paintings draw from Rastgar’s time spent cycling and mountain biking—rides that have led to memorable encounters with nature, animals, and unexpected moments of reflection. While not overtly political, the exhibition subtly reflects today’s cultural climate, viewed through Rastgar’s perspective and balanced by his signature imagination and sense of movement.

Beyond his artistic practice, Rastgar and his wife, Dylan, run a business centered on buying and selling vintage clothing. Nostalgic sportswear makes up much of their selection, and a quick glance around the studio makes one thing clear—Rastgar’s loyalty to his favorite hockey team runs deep.

The studio also doubles as a workspace for Dylan, who focuses on her seamstress practice and is currently sewing a wedding dress for a friend.

Rastgar also uses apparel as a canvas for select works, including commissioned pieces like this jacket created for a client in New York City.

One of my favorite parts of these studio visits is experiencing an artist’s earlier work—sometimes pieces from years back. Seeing those works firsthand offers insight into how their practice has evolved, while also highlighting the themes and subjects that continue to surface over time.

Additionally, it’s inspiring to see how each artist shapes their space—the objects they collect, the pieces they live with, and the things they choose to look at every day alongside their own work. I could not help but notice the Jeffrey Sincich open sign among several other rad wall hangings.

Be sure to follow Rastgar's Instagram; @gigamelted - As shown on these shirts he printed with his pal, master screen printer, and past Timeless Thrills exhibitor, Black Stamp Studios.

Amine Rastgar's solo exhibition, Present Day Babylon will have an opening reception at Timeless Thrills Gallery on Saturday, March 7th from 6-9pm.  The exhibit will be on view through April 18th.  We look forward to seeing you all at the opening!
